THE IWO TRIO
On the first Tuesday of each month, at 11:030 AM, two Alachua County residents meet for lunch at Jason's Deli (6791 West Newberry
Road at the Oaks Mall Plaza--the back room is located at the far wall on the right). The two World War II veterans, who call themselves
the "IWO TRIO," represent two of the three US MARINE CORPS divisions that took part in the landings on Iwo Jima. Several other veterans
of Iwo Jima--Navy and Marine--plus many support members attend these monthly gatherings. The lunch program can range from speakers
discussing VA benefits to military maneuvers in the Pacific War. The public is invited. For more information about these monthly lunches,
call Bob Gasche at 352-376-0402.
Clif Cormier of the 3rd Marine Division, Clair Chaffin of the 4th Marine Division, and Bob Gasche
of the 5th Marine Division fought in the bloodiest battle in US Marine Corps history. Sadly, Clair was killed in June 2009 during
an armed robbery attempt in South Carolina. In Clair's memory, the Iwo Trio decided to keep the "Iwo Trio"name.
Iwo Jima was the only battle in the Pacific where the American casualties exceeded that of the Japanese. Total casualties by the Americans
exceeded 26,000, with the Marines suffering more than 23,000.
Iwo Jima means "sulfur Island" in Japanese. This battle was the first
American amphibious assault on Japanese territory. Of the 22,000 Japanese who defended the island, only 212 were taken prisoner. This
battle showed how far the Japanese would defend their country--a decision that was to influence the use of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima
